Tips for fresh breath
Who doesn’t like or want fresh breath? At one time or another most of us have had the bad luck to be around someone who had terrible breath. It can sometimes be so bad that you wonder how that person could not know it. You know how it affects the way you act and feel about that person but you certainly don’t want to be the one to tell him or her that their breath stinks, do you? You know how difficult that can be. And now, another thought is creeping into your mind.
What if you have bad breath but no one wants to tell you? What can you do about it? How can you find out if you have halitosis?
An easy way to find out is kind of yucky but it does work. Stick a clean finger onto the back of your tongue and scrape some saliva from it. Put this on the back of your hand and wait for a minute. Now smell your hand. If you don’t feel it’s something you’d want to be around then let’s look at what can be done about it.
What causes bad breath in the first place?
First of all, the prime cause of bad breath comes from the bacteria in our mouths. If you don’t brush and floss often enough they can get rancid and give off toxins and that awful breath odor. But bacteria alone aren’t the only cause of bad breath. Strong foods such as garlic, onions, and fish can linger inside your mouth for hours, even after brushing. If you smoke or chew tobacco you are sure to have stinky breath. Another cause can be an ulcer or other tummy problems. Low-carb diets can also add to the bad smell. Any or all of these things are sure to give you dragon breath!
How can I get rid of bad breath?
First of all, you should brush your teeth, and tongue, twice a day. It’s important to reach the back of your tongue to get rid of the bacteria lurking there. One study found that this alone reduced bad breath smell by 70%.
Be sure to floss at least once a day. This will get out hidden food particles and will remove plaque which is a coating of bacteria around the teeth.
- Gargle with peroxide – that’s right! Simply swig, swish and spit. The oxygen in the hydrogen peroxide will kill the mouth bacteria.
- Drink plenty of water since bad breath is caused by dry mouth. Drinking plenty of water is also good for the rest of your body.
- Chew mint or cinnamon gum. Cinnamon gum was found to have better odor-fighting power than all the others.
